Seeing Geiko: A Photography Exhibition by Robert van Koesveld
12 to 22 MAY 2016 – Kyoto
What do we see when we glimpse geiko and maiko in Kyoto’s cobbled lanes?
Do we see the disciplined artistry, the years of practice and the communities working to maintain complex traditions in a modern world? Or do we just see an exotic fantasy?
An exhibition honouring geiko and maiko as artists and engaging hosts, while also asking us to consider our narratives about them.
The exhibition will use the three main spaces in the beautiful Mid-Edo period traditional matchiya (townhouse) to show three groups of work by Robert van Koesveld
There are three rooms each with it's own theme:
The Encounter – The Gei in Geiko – Seeing Geiko
A Geiko Ozashiki Experience is also offered on two afternoons. By special arrangement a geiko or maiko will dance in the beautiful gallery space accompanied by a jikata playing shamasen. Dates Sunday 15 and Saturday 21 May.
