Are Geikos the same as Geisha?

In Kyoto the correct name for a fully trained geisha performing traditional arts is Geiko. The name Maiko is the name for an apprentice Geiko in Kyoto. Training in the arts of dance, playing traditional instruments, traditional singing and tea ceremony continues after the five or so years of apprenticeship. During preparation for the large stage performances extra training is required as well.
