Kyoto Spring Intensive April 2024

I have designed a new approach for one of my Japan Photography Tours with my long time Kyoto collaborator – Akie Watanabe. The concept is to use a single location to enable a deeper focus. This Kyoto Spring Intensive (APRIL 7 – 15, 2024) will have no time lost through travelling between different towns, so we expect to have a very creative experience during the 7 days and 8 nights. We have chosen dates that give us the best chance for Sakura (Cherry Blossom Time), that is of course a busy time in Japan. However, Akie has been guiding in Kyoto for many years and knows lots of less-visited locations, and our central location will mean we can set off early for the busiest places. Blossom time can be unpredictable, (2023 came 10 days early), but we should be able to find blossom whatever happens.

There is a special poetic quality to falling petals.

Kyoto has deep cultural roots, having been the capital 794 to 1868, and has many exquisite gardens, shrines and temples. However, it also has a modern side well worth exploring. In addition to meeting and photographing Geiko and Maiko, we will attend an Odori performance in one of the five Kagai (Geiko/Maiko districts). These are large stage theatrical dance performances in a traditional style and are very special.

Kyoto is also about traditional crafts and we will meet some master craftworkers and get an understanding of their work as well as photographing.

Being based in one location for an extended time means guests have time to review their images and begin or extend personal projects. There will be daily review sessions and the small group (4-6) means individual coaching and discussion is very much a part of the workshop.

Early in the workshop we will experience tea ceremony with another Kyoto collaborator – Takako Morita. Our plan is to open up a conversation about Japanese aesthetics to inform our creative image making throughout the workshop.

The shorter than usual trip length may suit those with less time to travel, while those with more time may want to add other locations in Japan before or after the workshop. Kyoto will host the annual Kyotographie festival after our tour ends as well as KG+, an extensive fringe photography festival. Festival dates are only notified early in the new year, but based on past dates, should work well if guests are able to stay on in Kyoto.
